LSU Press was first organized in 1931 to publish a modest series of graduate studies and became an autonomous department of the university in 1935 as a nonprofit book publisher dedicated to the publication of scholarly, general interest, and regional books. It is the only university press to have won a Pulitzer Prize in both fiction and poetry and is perhaps most widely recognized as the original publisher of John Kennedy Toole's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, A Confederacy of Dunces (1980).
